Battle Report - Game 2

Welcome to the latest in the series we are calling Battle Reports. Basically these are just turn by turn breakdowns of Heroclix games that we have played online and we hope might be interesting to other players.
 
To play online we are using the website from http://www.creationmatrix.com/Map/newgame.html this also allows you to using tokens to represent your characters on the map and other effects. We also used Skype and an online dice roller and Hcrealms unit section to track dials.
 
For this game we decided to branch out a little from our first game and go for a 300pt modern game.

Chris: It's fair to say that both of us are big fans of Mr Mxyzptlk, although neither of us know how to pronounce it correctly. My team is a swarm team utilising a lot of ID cards and a lot of perplex to really pump up ID characters attack and damage. Lydea is there to mainly get me the map I want, due to the interaction between her and power batteries, and I like the Ultron-6 drones over the other ones mainly for their improved movement. I prefer the Atom's colossal retaliation power over the other colossal's because it is the most reliable ignoring as it does shape change and super senses.

 Andy: I had just got Superman, so wanted to use him some kind of team and thought Mr. Mxyzptlk was a good partner, helping him defensively, and also allowing me to make Superman Giant to avoid plasticity. Indigo Battery made a lot sense as it offered Superman outwit protection, at range anyway, more than anything. Finally, STAR Lab Tech allowed me to increase my strike range and also could give Superman Precision Strike to deal with those pesky Mr. Mxyzptlk's

Setup: Andy won the roll off and as he would like to hang on to his Indigo Ring he gave me map choice, I chose Black Mercy Garden from the War of Light. I did think for a minute about a different map as Superman has the ability to mind control through his “Criminals become Superman Robots” but thought if any of my characters get hit by a close combat attack from him they are probably dead anyway. Chris's Mxy rolled a 3 for his trait and Andy rolled a 4. Team Chris started at the bottom of the map, Andy started at the top. Chris had to extend his starting area to actually fit in all of his team.

Turn 1
 
Chris: Lydea carried Atomica and a Drone up behind the blocking terrain picking up a heavy object on the way. Battery assigned the decoy construct to Mxy, Mxy phased up, Atom carried the other drone with a sidestep and drones both sidestepped.

Andy: I rolled leadership with Superman and replaced Mxy's dice roll to get rid of his 4. Mxy power actioned to get a 1 instead on his card. Superman then carried up Mxy and STAR labs tech to hide behind the blocking picking up an ultra heavy.

Turn 2

Chris: Drone (4) sidestepped carrying Atomica destroying some more blocking and brought in Nick Fury on top of the heavy object. Mxy phased up pushing himself on to his second click and turned Nick into a Giant. The battery assigned Lydea the Sniper Rifle. The inspiration effect from the level 7 card gave Nick +2 range I perplexed up his damage by +2 (which in hindsight was maybe too greedy). Superman was protected from him with the emotional spectrum effect so attacked Mxy. I didn't think I needed to take away his super senses because my Mxy had a 3 on his card so I could force him to fail his roll. Unfortunately his Mxy used his dice to make me miss and despite having 2 probs I couldn't hit him. Nick Fury missed? Nick Fury never misses! Stunned by this state of affairs I decided to cheat (unintentional) and used Nick's Watchers Eyes to take away Superman's Hypersonic which I shouldn't have been able to do because the Indigo battery stops me drawing line of fire to him. However Andy didn't notice this misplay either and play continued.  
 
Andy: Battery assigned the Wall construct to Myx who pushed on to his second click by getting another 4 dice on his card. Cleared Superman.

Turn 3

Chris: The indigo battery effect kept me from sending another ID character after Mxy or Superman so I thought about this turn for a while and finally both drones sidestepped, Mxy made Lydea into a Giant and the Battery assigned the Mallet to Atomica. Lydea got her attack and range perplexed up and used her wrapped in shadow power to be placed within range of the Star Labs Tech and took her out with an 11 range attack. Used my final perplex on Mxy's defence as I knew he would be the main target Andy would want to take out. The Atom continued sidestepping up and everyone else cleared.
 
Andy: Mxy turned Superman into a Giant and Superman used his Hypersonic speed carrying Mxy, after a quick spot of calculation decided that trying to hit opposing Mxy with a 20D, shape change, super senses and a potential reroll with the Blue Battery was a losing proposition and went for one of the Drones instead, hoping to restrict his ID usage. Swish and missed. Battery used barrier to push it down it dial. I decided not to use the Wall construct as I thought that it would make no difference whatsoever, and potentially aid Chris in making a single target Pulse Wave.

Turn 4 
 
Chris: My battery was now on click 12 so had probability control so decided to stop pushing it and leave it there. Drone called in Hawkeye, I perplexed up Mxy's attack three times and running shot pulse wave giving 2 tokens to Superman and opposing Mxy and dealing them both pushing damage. Hawkeye then did a running shot psychic blast and hit Superman for 3 penetrating damage. Cleared Lydea and the Battery.
 
Andy: I knew that Superman could be KO'd with a pulse wave next turn, as his stop clicks can be ignored, Mxy had the option to run away as was on click 3 and could phase as a free action. I decided instead to try and block a single target pulse wave on Superman by phasing Mxy in front of him and used some barrier to try and keep himself alive.

Turn 5

Chris: I knew I could lock them down again with another pulse wave from Mxy but thought I should take out his Mxy this turn and then Superman next turn. Lydea showed off by calling in Triathlon but firstly using her wrapped in shadow power to be placed in hindering terrain a bit closer. My Mxy still had a 3 on his card so I knew I only had to hit and I could force a failed super senses roll. Triathlon charged and flurried his Mxy hitting and KO'ing him. I then perplexed up my Mxy's attack 3 times and pulse waved his Superman again giving him 2 tokens and a push. Sidestepped drones carrying Atomica.
 
Andy: Used barrier to push the battery on Perplex, taking up Superman's defense.

Turn 6

Chris: Drone sidestepped carrying Atomica brought in Thor, perplexed up his attack three times, Lydea carried Mxy out of the pulse wave area of effect. Thor running shot/pulse wave, needed a 4 with 2 probs and Mxy still had a 3 on his card that could have even turned a critical miss into a hit. Funnily enough I hit and KO'd Superman.

Final thoughts:
 
Chris: Annoyed with myself that I made that simple error with the Indigo battery emotional spectrum as I should really know better, hopefully it didn't change the outcome of the game. I really like playing this sort of team and even if Andy had risked attacking Mxy and taken him out I think I had enough options to overcome him once he moved into the middle of the map. I have played Lydea a lot with the Book of the Skull and even though with a Battery she loses charge/running shot on the right map you can make up for it by using her Wrapped in Shadow power. If I play this team again I would be tempted to drop one of the ID cards and swap the bulldozer or Mallet for the boxing glove with her. I might also try and include mind control as an option as this map makes them more potent. As for Andy's team personally I am not convinced about that particular Superman in competitive play, at that points value he is in the Kyle Rayner/Super Skrull territory and just isn't as capable as either of those. His stop clicks can either be outwitted or ignored so you can't really rely on them to protect you. 
 
Andrew: Having a longer think about it, I should have given up the ring, and taken map choice, picking somewhere Indoors with lots of corners to hide behind instead, making Chris' giants a little less useful. I would have to agree with Chris on Superman's use in the competitive game, I think I was a little naïve to how much Pulse Wave can be used via ID cards, but again Superman doesn't match up to Super Skrull etc. I normally like playing a team with 3 characters but with the point costs more evenly distributed.

On Chris' team I think the concept is fantastic, with the Ultron Drone's effectively acting as 120 pts for the ID cards, it's a clever way of replacing 30 pts with potentially 120 for the turn, and continue to do so. I plan to use one of my more tried and tested team for next time, and make it a much more even fight - fingers crossed, actually deal some damage next time!
