Battle Report - Game 3

Friday, 15 April 2016 08:00:00 Europe/London

Welcome to the latest in the series we are calling Battle Reports. Basically these are just turn by turn breakdowns of Heroclix games that we have played online and we hope might be interesting to other players.

To play online we are using the website from http://www.rogueeffect.com/forum/map/newgame.html this also allows you to using tokens to represent your characters on the map and other effects. We also used Skype and an online dice roller and Hcrealms unit section to track dials.

For this game we decided to try out some teams you might see at modern events after the rotation in the summer.

Chris's Team
1: Wasp #206 50pt
2: Giant-Man G200 50pts
3: Ant-Man 202 100pts
4/5: Ultron-6 Drone (x2) 60pts

Avengers Response Unit ATA (x3) 9pts
(assigned to all 3 Ant-men)

Avengers Round Table +5 ID cards 30pts
Captain America (slot 1)
SHIELD level 7 (slot 2)
Wonder Woman (slot 3)
Bucky Barnes (slot 4)
Triathlon (slot 5)

Total 299

Sideline figures:

Nick Fury 120pts
Capt America FFAOU 006 50pts
Winter Soldier #100 95pts
BvS Wonder Woman 105pts
Triathlon 60pts
Hank Pym #201
Hank Pym #001
Ant-Man #205
Ant-Man #003

Andrew's Team

1: Koriand'r 100pts
+Eclipso 25pts
+Sloth Relic 8pts
2: Sloth Chase 97pts
3: The Wizard 50pts

Pandora's Box 20pts (Wrath + Lust): Path of the Hunter

Chris: I think Morphing Ant-Men are very flexible and x2 50pts versions provide a lot of support options and can flood the map with annoying ants. Ultron Drones are the ideal figures to use with ID cards and even better the Ultron-6 have the scientist keyword so I can build a themed team with the Ant-Men. This leaves me with around 100 points left over and I decided to play a 100pt version of Ant-Man to round the team off and to provide a very potent combination of support and heavy hitter once a 100pt Giant-Man hits the map. The ID cards provide a variety of options with ranged attackers, Nick Fury and Winter Soldier, close combat attackers, Wonder Woman and Triathlon as well as shenanigan potential in Captain America who can give Ant-Men movement actions which can combo with their morph trait. Lastly the round table suits this team as all those characters on the map means it's dial is going to turn reasonably quickly and click 15 is where you want to aim for to allow you to provide inspirations to your whole team. This is a +5 themed team as well which is very important as I really need a map where I can hide my squishy Ant-Men for a few turns while they pump out Ants.

Andy: Originally this team had Mr.Freeze in place of Wizard and Indigo Battery in place of Pandora's Box and made it difficult for my opponent to do much of anything, but as we're playing with rotation in mind I switched up a few things and tried to make the same idea work. Koriand'r is fantastic for 100 points, and with all the ID shenanigans I expect it's important to have a figure that can take a hit but still be extremely useful. Sloth does what Sloth does, when within his 4 squares you're restricted to only one action, of any kind, making things like charge/running shot a non-option, so if positioned right can be a nuisance. Wizard offers me probability control, and is relatively safe via his movement special – he can also summon tigers!

Setup: With a +5 initiative bonus I won map and chose Flash's Museum from the Flash OP set. Andy chose to start at the bottom of the map with the elevated terrain and Chris on at the top. This is a decent map for my Ant-Man and let's them stay safe during the early rounds plus the drones can breakdown the walls with their improved movement when I am ready to strike.

Turn 1:
Chris: I moved very slowly up with all three Ant-Men morphing into Hank Pym #201 (1), Wasp (2) and Ant-Man #205 (3) putting out 3 Ant-Swarms which sidestepped their way up the board.

Andy: Chose impervious with Eclipso, gave Sloth a power action to assign the Lust Relic from Pandora's box. Koriand'r carried Sloth up and Wizard moved up. After seeing how the round table could be turned, and the amount of ant tokens Chris' team could generate I set out deciding not to KO any of them, or do it via incap so it doesn't spin. I wanted to get the Ultron drones out the way first so he had less ID options. Koriand'r ignores characters and my team had sidestep, so ignoring them seemed like an easy enough task.

Blue
1. Koriand'r
2. Sloth
3. The Wizard

Turn 2:

Chris: Drones sidestepped smashing the walls and Ant-Men moved through the gaps morphing into
Wasp (1), Ant-Man #202 (2), Giant-Man (3) pumping out some more Ants and sidestepping them up. I also turned one of the Ant-Swarms into a Giant-Ant (Red 4). I knew on turn 2 I wanted the Giant-Man, so I had the option of using colossal stamina on turn 3 and Ant-Man #202 for his trait that allows Ant-Swarms to act like despotellis and follow around opposing characters.

Andy: Chose impervious again with Eclipso and gave Koriand'r a power action to assign the Wrath Relic and using Pandora's box got Prob Control for both Sloth and Koriand'r. Sidestepped Sloth and Koriand'r into hindering terrain.

Turn 3:

Chris: Wasp gave all the Ant-Swarms +3 move so with sidestep as well I moved them all up the board basing Koriand'r with one of the Ant-Swarms. Cleared all of the Ant-Men.

Andy: Chose impervious again with Eclipso, rolled running shot on pandora's box, Sloth incapped one of the Ant-swarms to death and Wizard moved up. Koriand'r sidestepped and cleared.

Turn 4:

Chris: With several Ants near opposing figures and ready to annoy them I knew this was the turn to strike. I sidestepped a drone through a wall and called in Nick Fury turning round table to click 3. The other drone ran down the field and smashed down a wall to give me a clear shot at Koriand'r. I morphed the 100pt Ant-Man (3) into Hank Pym #001 to give me another prob should I need it and morphed a 50pt one into Ant-Man #003 to get perplex to bump up Nick's attack. Nick used his watcher's eyes to turn off Energy Shield on Koriand'r and attacking with 13A and 4D hitting her 19D for 4 penetrating damage. This dropped her to click 5, she chose +1 damage and invulnerability through Eclipso.

Andy: Koriand'r chose +1 damage and invulnerability through Eclipso. Wizard attempted to shoot the Giant-Ant but despite a prob failed to do so and pushed to click 2, then outwitted the Giant Ant's sidestep. Koriand'r sidestepped with the Ant-Swarm following her, courtesy of Ant-Man #202 trait, and attacked and KO'd the drone, turning the round table to click 5. Sloth was unable to do very much here as incap against ant-swarms without tokens on wasn't that great an option so sidestepped, with ant-swarm following and left it at that.

Turn 5:

Chris: While Sloth wasn't doing anything offensive he did stop me doing what I wanted to do this turn which was to bring out Captain America to move up the 100pt Hank Pym (3) to morph into Giant-Man and then charge and flurry with double outwit. However Sloth's FREED FROM YOUR SLOTH trait stops a lot of free actions so I couldn't pull this off. So instead I moved up Wasp (1) morphing into Hank Pym #201 creating an Ant-Swarm and also moved up Hank Pym #001 morphing into Giant-Man and creating a Giant-Ant. The other Giant-Ant moved up next to Wizard. Giant-Man outwitted IM on Koriand'r and surviving drone sidestepped back into hindering.

Andy: Koriand'r chose +1 damage and invulnerability through Eclipso and he got Prob on Pandora's box for Sloth and Koriand'r. Koriand'r hit Giant-Man for 4, taking 2 clicks with his invincible turning the round table to click 7. Sloth tried to breakaway to sidestep to get a ranged incap on Giant-Man but failed to breakaway so did nothing. Wizard outwitted blades on the Giant-Ant.

Turn 6:

Chris: Unfortunately for Andy he had knocked the round table to click 7 which allowed me to bring back the SHIELD level 7 card, clicking the round table to 8, which I immediately decided to use to finish off Koriand'r. After a couple of minutes trying to figure out how to get a line of fire on her I sidestepped the drone and sidestepped Hank Pym #201, brought out Nick turning round tabel to click 14, Hank Pym + empower from the Ant-Swarm smashed a square of blocking terrain and morphed into Ant-Man 205. Nick turned off Energy Shield on Koriand'r and shot her for another 4 penetrating damage which KO'd her.

Andy: Wizard finally managed to take out the Giant-Ant, knocking round table to 15, and outwitted poison on the Ant-Swarm. However he decided that Sloth + the Wizard had no chance against the rest of my team and conceded at this point.

Final thoughts:

Chris: Great as Nick Fury was in coming in twice I think the MVP of this game was Ant-Man #202 and his trait with the Ant-Swarms. Koriand'r needed to sidestep to get away to use her move and attack but that proved impossible with them following her around after the sidestep resolved. It also meant that Sloth could never use his 3 target ranged incap. I am a huge fan of the morphing Ant-Men, much to the annoyance of my usual playgroup, normally I just play the 50pt versions but when I was building this team I was looking at the scientist keyword for around 100pt and didn't find anyone better so threw in a 100pt version as well. He doesn't do a whole lot more than the 50pt version until you turn into Giant-Man and pound opponents into the ground with his flurry and double outwit which is why I put that particular Captain America on the sideline. However there are a lot of other potent scientists including the new OP Doctor Octopus, Captain Marvel Prime, Doctor Demonicus which as they are slightly cheaper you could try and possess to give them a little more defence (as they all could do with it) and drop the ATA.

I think Andy's team could use a little tweaking to make it work better, Sloth is a very underrated figure and with the Green Battery and White Witch rotating is a potential way of shutting down teams that rely on free actions, I am looking at you Zombie Super Skrull. However he can't do much offensively apart from incap which limits him quite a bit in my opinion. After the game I suggested to Andy to replace the Wizard with Atomica and put some ID cards on the team that Sloth could call in which gives him some offence to go with his impressive trait.

Andy: Before we started I didn't favour myself in this match-up, however until the second Nick Fury showed up I thought I'd have the better chance of closing it out. Sloth against swarms teams, as Chris has mentioned, loses some effectiveness. I can incap, and potentially 3 targets, although normally one stands next to him to stop that, but in a swarm it hurts less. With one or two attackers incapping both is huge and much more effective.
Replacing Wizard with Atomica and ID cards for Sloth to call in, and become a little more offensive, is a brilliant suggestion and one I will definitely be using when playing this team next.
