ATA Analysis - Avengers

Saturday, 6 April 2013 10:01:01 Europe/London

Hi, my name is Elliott Weights. I am a regular player down on the south coast UK in venues Littlehampton and Portslade. I would consider myself to be more of a player than a collector. I have been playing since Infinity challenge. One of the things that I enjoy the most is building teams.  I near enough always build keyword teams and like having a set keyword to build to. Playing with ATA's allows me to do this and I thought I would share some of my thoughts on them. Hopefully reading this will allow you to consider using some of them in the future. This week we are going to be looking at the Avengers Heroic age ATA.

avengers-ATA

After the siege story line in Marvel comics a new Heroic age was introduced. After seven years of depressing story lines Marvel wanted hero's to be hero's again. Here is what the ATA that WizKids released looks like:

“When a character using this team ability is given a move action after actions resolve roll a D6 that cannot be re rolled. On a roll of 6 remove an action token from that character”

So what can you do with it? Well when a character moves normally or using a move action (such as phasing or leap climb for instance) they have a chance at removing an action token AFTER one is placed , “resolving an action includes resolving free actions or game affects followed by applying action tokens”.

Here is my team I used when using this ATA:

M10A012 Iron Man 101pts

CW015 Ant-Man 75pts

FFCW004 Wasp 50pts

IH001 Hulk 165pts

HA040 Captain America 72pts

FFCW002 Thor 125pts

Total 588pts

This team features core avengers team members from across Heroclix sets. The team is taken directly from avengers issue 5 where the team battles lava men and the hulk guest stars. Now lets look at the pros and cons of the ATA itself.

Pros – Only costs 2 points per character. If you have some points left over then why not? Can be handy when trying to get your pieces up the board if you pull it off.

Cons – only happens on a roll of a six. In a single game you wont roll a six many times on a single die so the ATA may not get used at all. Only also only applies to move actions, so no charge or Running shot or Hypersonic speed. The ATA also adds on to the amount of points that the opponent scores at the end of the game for each character. In a more competitive game this could bee the difference between winning and losing.

All in all a nice ATA that for only 2 points provides a chance at helping out your side. There are many other teams that would work with this ATA. Why not give it a try and post a comment and say how it worked?

Edited by Blue Rat Games: After some discussion and research between Elliott and ourselves we agree with the comments below that resolving an action includes the action taken + any free actions/affects + placing token + pushing damage. So when a character uses this ATA the action token is applied, pushing damage taken (if necessary) then a roll is made to remove a token. The confusion lies in the sentence in the rulebook where it describes resolving an action and I agree the wording is not the best. Both myself and Elliott would like to apologise for any confusion caused and hopefully this does not detract from your enjoyment of his first article.

Vicente, being placed by TK does not give the chracter placed a move action. Not sure what you are reffering to otherwise??

Hi Vicente, I have changed the BEFORE to AFTER in the article now and removed the reference to avoiding pushing damage. Note that Elliott already mentions that is it only works with Move actions and not with charge, running shot and HSS.

I wanted to add Telekinesis or placing the character to the examples of Elliot. He already explains that this ATA only works with move actions.

Hi there!
Nice to see an ATA's Corner.

I want to add a little thing: Remember that this ATA only works with Move Actions. Characters TKed, Running Shot or HSS does not activate the ATA.

And last thing, in the article still appears "BEFORE" (in caps) where you are talking about the use.

Regards!

Article was great Elliott, I certainly didn't intend to take away from that. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your future ones.

Heroclix as a game is all about wording, unfortunately a lot of that isn't as clear as it perhaps should be though.

Well the one ATA that I really want to know just how devastating it is is 'hydra deep science division' have you ever played it? It looks as though it would really scupper the oposition. Anyway that is my request.

Samual and Alan, my apologies for the confusion. The above Edit will clear it up. Mistake made due to wording in rule book. Still does not take anything away from rest of article

Hi Guys, I have asked Elliott to double check his sources and he will get back to us with the correct ruling. Thanks for the interest.

Edit: We have amended the article with an explanation at the bottom regarding confusion around what an action resolving includes. Hope this clears this up and if nothing else I have learnt something new.

Hey Elliott... great read!
Its not an ATA I have considered before but seems pretty playable :)
I think I agree with the others about how it works, however the chance of moving in and then being free to attack without pushing is very apealing! Also with the large amount of indomitable available now especially with core avengers I think it's one worth adding to your roster.
Looking forward to your next one... do you take requests?
