Collector's Corner - Changeling

Monday, 5 August 2013 10:08:00 Europe/London

Welcome back to another Collector's Corner! Beast Boy fans have really been having their cake and eating it lately when it comes to Heroclix, the character has had no less than 9 figures in the past few sets. Naturally for a shape shifter these figures have come in a few different guises from Pterydon and T-Rex to Bear and Dolphin all held together by a brilliant game mechanic that allows players to switch the figures on the playing field as Beast Boy takes shape. Today we're taking a look at the Changeling figure from the Teen Titans set, which may have a different name but is just another form that Beast Boy takes on.

Set: Teen Titans (2013)
Number: 038
Rarity: Rare

Sculpt: This is one of the most dynamic Beast Boy figures yet showing the hero midway during the transformation from his humanoid form to that of a tiger.

This is Changeling from the legendary 80s 'The New Teen Titans' series from George Perez and Marv Wolfman and the figure recreates the pose from the first cover of that series remarkably well. I have to admit I wasn't a fan of the figure having a full Changeling sculpt and half a tiger sculpt attached but after looking at the source material I can definitely see what Wizkids were going for and I appreciated the sculpt a lot more. Changeling is definitely something long time Teen Titans fans will really want to add to their collection, though 'New 52' fans might wonder why the character is green instead of red.

Score:

Paint: The paintwork on the translucent tiger sculpt is exquisitely detailed, everything looks organic right down to the whiskers and really helps to give the animal a little bit of that Beast Boy character.

Changeling himself has a basic costume design with a few red lines to give it some definition and the paint job is well done, again I have to praise the Wizkids staff for having steady hands and staying within the lines on such a small figure. They've even managed to give the character a different shade of green for his hair giving the figure a solid silhouette from a distance.

Extras: This Changeling figure can be attached to the New Teen Titans team base which when fully constructed recreates the cover to 'The New Teen Titans' #1 from the 80s, a nice touch that will resonate with fans of the team. The figure I received is one of the better examples of the SwitchClix bases, coming off his base easily but clicking back on enough to know he won't fall off by accident.

Overall: Changeling is a great figure which harkens back to one of the best interpretations of the character, and features some of the best use of translucent plastic to show the figure morphing yet!

Score:

Check back in a few weeks time when we take a look at the Red Hood figure from the Teen Titans set, the last time we looked at the character it got 4.5/5 can this one do that little bit extra to get top marks?

Paul started collecting Heroclix over a decade ago when he picked up a Hypertime booster at his local comic book store, he was instantly hooked by the idea of detailed collectible figures that you could also play a game with.
