Rules and Regs - Powers: The New Age (2)

Hi my name is Vicente de los Santos and welcome to my latest article on the Heroclix rules. These articles are designed to help you better understand some of the new and complicated mechanics of the game and improve your game. I would also like to encourage a discussion of these mechanics and rules, so please feel free to ask any question you have in the comment section below.

With this article, we finish the fast review about the new changes of the powers. A visual guide where we can check the new improvements, limitations and maybe some tricks. Today we will focus on Energy Explosion and the Combat Experts, but the other changes will be commented too!

With the new PAC, a new set of powers arrives (The pink ones) but a bunch of the oldies has been revised. There are great changes, with new tactics and a whole new world of possibilities for figures that maybe now, with that revision, are more valuable for our teams.

Have a Blast! - Energy Explosion

Energy Explosion has major changes, making it very interesting and it makes characters with more than one target (The bolt on the base) very valuable. With the new changes, Energy Explosion does not require an action for activation, it works when our character is given a ranged combat action.
Tip: It´s important to know that Energy Explosion activates when the ranged combat action deals damage. If we use Mind Control as a ranged action, Energy Explosion does not activate.
So, with the new Energy Explosion, we target one (or more) character(s). All the characters (friendly or not) adjacent to one or more hit targets are in an area of effect and will suffer 1 damage for each :bolt: printed on this character's base. Hit characters are dealt damage normally, so the bloodshed is promised!

Energy Explosion

Take a look on the pic. Green Goblin uses Energy Explosion against Emma Frost. The other characters are not eligible as a target because they are using Stealth. If we hit Emma, Wolverine Skrull and Storm are in the area of effect, so they will suffer 2 damage (Green Goblin has 2 :bolt: printed). Both of them are untargeted characters, so Wolverine could not use Shape Change. And of course, Emma is dealt damage normally (+1 from Taskmaster's Enhancement in this example).

Tip: The damage to the untargeted characters comes from the printed bolts of the character using Energy Explosion. If the character has the Octopus Arms, the three bolts it gives are not valid for the Explosion.

Energy Explosion 2

In this example we combine Energy Explosion with Penetrating/P. Blast (Goblin can use from the Gauntlet). It´s an easy combo and it works not only with the damage done to hit characters. It works with the others hit characters inside the area of effect. We target Magneto and Emma. If we hit, Storm and Wolverine are adjacent to hit characters, so they are being dealt damage too (2 damage for 2 bolts on the Goblin base). We have multiple hits, so we have to divide the damage dealt. Goblin deals 3 damage, plus 1 from Taskmaster. If we want to damage both targets, we could do 2 damage to everyone... and remember that is penetrating.

Tip: Goblin can use Ranged Combat Expert (Through the Gauntlet). But that power is activated with a Power Action, so Energy Explosion does not interact with it.

I´m the best there is at what I do... - Combat Expertises

The combat expert powers are more versatile now. These are still activated with a power action, but now we can choose to modify the attack, damage, or both. It´s a great change and now we can boost our attack if we need it. Some characters with these powers usually have low attack values at the end of their dials. With these changes, they can become serious threats until its last breath ... and if not ... we can always continue to use it as usual.

Combat Expertise

Storm and Mocking Bird against Zemo and Taskmaster. The female heroes have Ranged Combat Expert (Storm) and Close Combat Expert (Mocking Bird). In the pic you can check all the possibilities that bring us the powers. Storm may boost the damage because have a decent attack value. Mocking needs a high roll to hit, so maybe the right choice will be boosting the attack value, or just use the +1/+1 option)

Get guy - Outwit, Perplex and Probability Control

These support powers are now limited by the range of the character who uses them. If our characters have no range (or a low value), the minimum is 6. Characters that have these powers and high ranges stand out from the other characters. Previously, many of our support characters helped us away from combat. Now it´s more risky.

Tip: Now there´s no limitation, just the character's range. If we increase that combat value (Perplex) we could use these powers beyond 10 squares!

Support Powers

Iron man and Scarlet Witch against Kang and Egghead. Check the range of every character. Kang is away from the area of Scarlet, so she cannot use Probability Control or Perplex against him (unless she uses her perplex and the perplex of Iron Man to increase her range). Egghead has a range value of 4 and he cannot attack Scarlet, but he possesses Outwit, and then he can use up to 6 squares (the minimum). Kang has a range value of 9. He can reach both of his enemies too, so for this attack, the villains can use double outwit... bad luck for the heroes.

Do the Ninja - Smoke Cloud

Another great improvement. Smoke Cloud now has the minimum range increased (From 1 to 4) and adds 2 more hindering terrain markers (a total of 6 squares). We used this power before as a defensive curtain or a way to stop the enemy's advance. Now Smoke is more annoying. Characters who occupy a square with a Smoke Cloud terrain marker modify their attack value by -1 (unless they can use this power too, or ignore hindering terrain for line of fire purposes)

Smoke Cloud

Storm cast a Smoke Cloud, placing the 6 terrain markers within range. Taskmaster is now trapped between smoke. He and Egghead occupies square with smoke terrain, so their attack values are modified by -1. Remember that this modifier applies both friends and enemies, so be careful when placing the smoke markers.

The rest of changes - Fast View

The other changes are simple, but we are not going to forget it. Here you have a brief description with a picture.

Incapacitate now can be used against characters with two action tokens, dealing 1 penetrating damage. Incapacitate is an attack that deals no damage, but if our target has 2 tokens, it will suffer the penetrating damage.

Incap + Super Strength

Super Strength now allow us to pick up an object or place an object it is holding (during our move action). We may either pick or place an object in the same turn. We cannot do both. Sadly, Super Strength does not modify the damage value of +2 when targeting blocking terrain, wall or object.

Super Strength

With this article we conclude the analysis of the new changes in the powers. Personally I think they have been good changes, some more expected than others, but all welcome to enjoy even more of our favorite game. What is your favorite change?
See you in the next article!
